The Apex Court heard the number of petitions relating to the condition of the migrant workers who had been left unemployed and were struck due to the national lockdown that has been declared in lieu of the outbreak of pandemic (COVID-19).
The petition had been filed before the court by the activists Anjali Bhardwaj and Harsh Mander to seek directions for the government for payment of wages to the migrant workers. In addition to this, a letter was addressed to Chief Justice Bobde by Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra and the court had suo Moto to address the issues of migrant being stranded due to lockdown.
Advocate, Prashant Bhushan appeared for the petitioners and perused the status report on the steps taken by the Union Government for the help of the migrant workers. It was contended that though the government was able to provide food and shelter to 15 lakh migrant workers; however, due to overcrowding of the shelters, the safety of labourers is still in question.
The petitions were heard through video conferencing by Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justices Nageshwar Rao and Mohan M. Shantanagoudar.
