As Martin Luther King once rightly said, “Law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and when they fail in this purpose they become the dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress.”
Nirbhaya case, a case that shook the conscience of the entire world, the brutality that one cannot even imagine was rendered on her. However, the justice was served, when the four convicts were hanged till death in Tihar Jail Complex on 20th March 2020 at 5:30 am after their death warrant was signed by the Magistrate.
However the justice was served in a very dramatic way and a number of petitions were filed to delay the execution of death penalty, so as to get the accused free from the clutches of law, as the apex court had laid in earlier cases that delay in execution of death sentence will turn the sentence into that of life imprisonment.
However the previous night the Delhi high court stayed the execution of the sentence, but at 12:13 am the court slammed the convict’s lawyer for raising irrelevant points at the last minute, further the court dismissed the plea stating that it was devoid of any merit.
A dummy execution was planned in the complex at 1:30 am but the convict’s lawyer approached the Hon’ble apex court raising the claim of juvenility and seeking deferment of execution of death sentence further challenging the presidential rejection of mercy petition.
However, the Supreme Court at 3:30 AM gave the order for the execution of the death sentence and dismissed the plea of the lawyer challenging the rejection of mercy petition.
