The bar council of India (BCI) assured Delhi HC that BCI and law schools will arrange an internship for law students. The division bench of J. Siddharth Mridul and J. Najmi Waziri recorded the submission of Counsel of BCI that he will assure from the future, that the council will assure arrangement and placement of internship to law students by the BCI and law schools itself. The law students will no more be required to make arrangements for their internships at law firms, advocates, government organizations, regulatory bodies, etc.
In 2016, a third-year law student from Amity Law School committed suicide as he was not allowed to appear in semester examination due to low attendance. The court asked BCI that according to Rule 10 of Part IV of BCI Rules how they ensure the minimum prescribed number of classes that are required to hold by law schools. The BCI in suo moto proceedings pertaining to suicide of law student of Amity has assured that council and law schools will arrange an internship for all law students.
The court in pursuance to this assurance asked to bring a record list of senior lawyers who have agreed to provide an internship in terms of Rule 26 of Part IV, schedule III of BCI Rules.
