Ministry of law and Justice introduced a scheme to set up 1023 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSC) exclusively for time bound disposal of rape and POCSO cases under National Mission for Safety of Women (NMSW).
Out of the 1023, 389 are solely for handling POCSO cases as each court will be assigned to 389 districts in country where the number of such pending cases exceed 100 as directed by the Supreme Court in Suo Moto Writ Petition (Criminal)No.01/2019 dated 25.07.2019.
The major aim of the scheme is to dispose over 1.6lakh cases of rape of children and women pending in various courts and hence assuring a safe living environment for women in India.
24 States and Union Territories including Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat have joined the scheme, which will have 792 FTSCs and 354 POCSO courts in which 218 FTSCs will be established in the state of UP alone and constant efforts are made for the willingness of others.
Department of Justice announced a total budget of Rs 767.25 Cr out of which Rs 474 crores will be given from the Nirbhaya fund of central government which is created to support the Women safety initiatives of Government and NGOs.
Each court is expected to settle 41-42 cases each quarter and 165 cases per year. 216 such FTSCs have been set up over past 2 months.
This measure by the Union government will hopefully provide protection to the female population and will act as a deterrent for the perpetrators as delay in procuring justice for the victims would be solved and the sentencing of punishment would get expedient.
