Kuldeep Sengar jailed for life for raping Unnao minor

A Delhi district court on Friday sentenced expelled MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, convicted for kidnapping and raping a woman in in 2017, to . District Judge Dharmesh Sharma announced the quantum of sentence.

Sengar has also been asked to pay a fine of Rs 25 lakh to the victim apart from the life sentence.

The CBI had earlier sought life imprisonment for the ex-BJP MLA, saying it was a fight for justice of an individual against the system.

CBI’s counsel and the complainant in the case sought maximum punishment for Sengar, saying that the court must consider the prolonged ordeal faced by the victim.

The counsel of the victim also supported the CBI’s submission and additionally sought sufficient monetary compensation for the survivor.

Sengar’s counsel, however, urged the court to give him minimum punishment of 10-years jail term, saying he had no prior criminal record.

The court had on Monday convicted Sengar for rape under the Indian Penal Code and the Act for the offence by a committing penetrative sexual assault against a child. The rape survivor was a when she was assaulted.

Sengar was convicted in one of 5 related cases transferred from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi.

The case, in which a on Monday convicted Sengar for the rape of a woman in Unnao in 2017 when she was a minor, is one of the five related cases that were transferred from Uttar Pradesh to the national capital.

The four other related cases are — framing of the rape survivor’s father in an illegal firearms case and his death in judicial custody, a conspiracy of Sengar with others in an accident case of the rape survivor and a separate case of her alleged gang rape by three others.
