After the truck car collision involving the Unnao rape survivor, two of her aunts and her lawyer in Rae Bareilly, on Sunday the CBI charged BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brother Manoj Singh Sengar along with 10 of his aides for cases under sections 302 for murder, 307 for attempt to murder, 120-B for criminal conspiracy and 506 for criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The incident took place while the family was on the way to visit the victim’s uncle in Rae Bareilly jail, detained for a separate case. It was alleged that the truck driver was linked to the MLA and the whole incident was orchestrated in order to kill the victim. With letters written by the victim to Chief Justice Gogoi alleging grave danger to their lives 2 weeks before the incident and outrageous protest by the victim’s family the case was finally shifted to the CBI from the state government.
With the teen and her lawyer being transferred from a Lucknow hospital to Delhi’s AIIMS, the Supreme Court today ordered all five cases to be transferred out of Uttar Pradesh to Delhi, and directed the UP goverment to pay an interim compensation of ₹ 25 lakh along with CRPF protection for the victim. A supreme court bench comprising of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Aniruddha Bose set a 45 day deadline for the trial of the Unnao rape case along with an order to complete the probe into the car crash in 7 days.
