The cases of lynching and mob violence are increasing day by day. Again the pressure of it is upon the Courts to decide the matter.
A lynch mob is an angry crowd of people who want to kill someone without a trial, because they believe that person has committed a crime. 16 cases of lynching have been reported in 2 months. 22 people have been killed in incidents of lynching. Police blame rumor mongering on social media for lynchings.
A 40-year-old woman was beaten to death by a mob of around 30 people in Ahmadabad on the suspicion of being a child-lifter. In another incident, a 45-year-old woman was assaulted in Surat for the same reason on June 26.
On June 22 An unidentified man was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Chhattisgarh’s Sarguja district. The attackers suspected the victim to be a child- lifter.
The issue was brought before a Divison Bench of Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Deepak Gupta. The Public Interest Litigation wad brought by the Congress Activist Tehseen Poonawalla.
The Senior advocate Anukul Chandra Pradhan was appearing for the trust brought before the court and said that the issues of mob lynching are increasing om a wide scale and no actions are being taken by the Government.
The Apex Court issued directions to the Parliament to enact new law to regulate mob lynching and cow vigilantism.
It was considered by the Court that the State failed on it’s part to perform the duty to promote fraternity among all citizens. Thus, the directions were imposed for better implementation and formulation of new laws in this regard. These directions aimed at tackling the menace of mob lynching.
